132 SUSTAINABLE TOURISM LAW Undoubtedly, the explicit recognition that is made with regard to tourism in the Treaty of Lisbon (art. 195 TFEU) constitutes an important step forward to achieve a European tourism policy. Subsequent documents (“Europe 2020, a strategy for smart, sustainable and inclusive growth” and “Europe, the world’s No 1 tourist destination”) reflect a greater commitment. The creation of networks for sustainable tourism, awareness campaigns, European tourism quality brands, sustainable tourism charters (such as protected natural areas) and a desire to export tourism sustainability to emerging countries, are good examples of sustainable tourism policies. In conclusion, the tourism sector shall take part in actions and trends of other European policies, such as the so-called “circular economy” (since tourism directly affects energy, water, food and waste) and it may be a source of opportunities, both for sustainable technical solutions and the increase of responsible travellers.
