158 SUSTAINABLE TOURISM LAW increase of internal efficiency and productivity. In addition to what has been said, notice that the increase in productivity exists within the logic of the production phenomenon, but the thrust represented by the pursuit of welfare, wealth and profit accelerates the phenomenon, and it is easy to understand how unequal productivity derives from the different weight with which the factors of productivity operate and, in particular, the factors of organization andmotivation. Certainly, production in the form of a company is still considered useful today, as it produces an efficient remuneration; and this is precisely where the endogenous teleonomic force that pushes the companies – and more generally the production companies – to remain in the economic system, through their teleology; in addition, production in the form of a company makes it possible to increase the productivity of the system, with an increase in general welfare; and in this resides the exogenous teleonomic force that pushes the system to try to maintain, expand, and – in some cases – introduce production in the form of a business. However great is the wealth produced, no matter how large the quantity and quality of the needs that the “productive man” succeeds in satisfying, the logic of production requires that productivity progress further, and the logic of wealth, particularly, makes this progress vital for the economic system and for humanity as a whole. So, what is the place where we can reconcile profit and solidarity, given that ethics constitute a pursuit of the common good? To do this, first of all it is necessary to see what the boundary line between individual interest and moral principles is; it is necessary to search for social profit as a link between profit and social needs, as the main goal of common life. In doing so, profit, when it is aimed at the valorisation of man 55 and of the heritage that surrounds him, ceases to be an exclusive criterion. And this is even more pertinent if we think that every possible solution that can be prospective must always interact in a context characterized by the vision of an economic system called to interact with the legal system. A system that, when it only aims to take note of the results achieved, is not able to exploit the needs of individuals and ends only with the ratification of transactions between strong powers. On the other hand, putting man, the environment and our historical, cultural and artistic heritage at the centre of the economic systemmeans that productivity and profit can be the basis for an action that is able to understand and satisfy the needs of the other. Needs that must be met by political communities, individuals 55 It must be said, in fact, that – although profit may also be one of the criteria for evaluating a good company performance – there are many encyclicals that, by understanding the company as a value in itself, also emphasize stability and continuity in production. Cf. see F. Capriglione, Etica della finanza e finanza etica, cit., p. 45, which refers explicitly to what is contained in the Encyclical Centesimus annus, par.35.
