760 SUSTAINABLE TOURISM LAW The construction of appropriate Indicators may be critical for decision makers as well as stakeholders since they may provide a reliable measurable impact of tourism flows in destinations (Kamenopoulos et al., 2016). Over the years, many different indicators of Sustainable Development have been proposed on multiple spatial scales and by different institutions such as the United Nations, the US Interagency Working Party Sustainability Indicators (proposed a set of 40 indicators relating to a variety of features of sustainability), theOrganization for Economic Development and Cooperation (OECD), the UN Economic Commission in cooperation with the OECD and the Statistical Office of the European Union (Eurostat) proposed a set of 28 policy-made indicators and capital- -based indicators to assess sustainability in European Union (EU) countries, the WorldTourismOrganisation (WTO) among others (Kamenopoulos et al., 2016a). CONCLUSIONS The creation of a newcomposite systemof indicators for sustainable development, specifically when tourism is involved is an important goal for each country. It is important to create the right indicator to drive the right signals for individuals, companies, and governments because there is a strong correlation between competitiveness and sustainable development. Over the last few decades, a broad consensus has emerged about the importance that must be played both to economic success, the quality of the environment and the social well-being. Today, politics demand more stringent regulation to preserve nature, achieve new well-being for the populations and lastly to reach the traditional economic wealthy. But this is an incomplete picture of how well we are doing since there has been a key problem along the years: the lack of critical and reliable data and information as well as the substantial amount of uncertainty regarding the causes and effects of decision-making. Taking into consideration this article, we can conclude that assessment of sustainable issues in selected countries has been playing an important role in the last years. Policies to promote tourism sustainable development require a new understanding of the path from statistics to policy. Sustainability assessment must be redefined because from a technical perspective the challenges for national statistical offices have different perspectives concerning the presentation of sustainable development indicators.
