Flagler for the Royal Victoria Hotel; 1900 Flagler opened the Hotel Colonial in Nassau. 1913 Manufactories & Hotels Encouragement Act. 1914 Development Board Act to promote tourism. 1917 Munson Steamship Line started its Cruise Ship Service to Florida. 1919 Chalk’s Airline started service. 1925 Steamship service started from New York, Britain & Canada to Nassau. 1927 The 200‑room Montague Hotel opened. 1929 Pan American Airlines instituted a 2½ hour daily flight from Miami. 1930 1st Airport built at Oakes Field in Nassau. 1937 Tourist Arrivals: 34,000. 1943 2nd Airport built on Nassau. 1945 End of World War; Genuine tourism growth in The Bahamas (1945‑1950). 3. CRITICAL TURNING POINT: THE 1950s A turning point for modern‑day tourism development in The Bahamas started in 1950, when the first steps to develop tourism as an instrument of economic development was taken. In 1950, the new members of The Bahamas’ House of Assembly, elected in 1949, evaluated areas to spur economic development. Given the limited availability of arable land and with no significant mineral deposits, except salt, the country was essentially forced into relying on tourism as its main economic development sector. In fact, given the past history of travel to the country and the benefits the country experienced, the new members of the House of Assembly pushed and gained support for their idea that tourism could bring prosperity to the islands, being instrumental in their developmental economic drive.By this time, several factors were evident or imminent. Travel opportunities were increasing because of an increase in the income per capita and improved standards of living. There were rapid developments in the means of transportation
