AIR QUALITY In the list relating to Eco-Certification, the hotel must meet one mandatory criterion, that is, the hotel needs to implement practices to reduce or offset its greenhouse gas emissions. The other four elements are on a voluntary basis, and they are as follows: (a) that no smoking policy is in place in some or all of the guest bedrooms, whereby the no smoking sign is visible; (b) that boiler emissions are monitored; (c) that the management is informing and encouraging customers to use public transport and bicycles; or (d) that the use of shared transport is encouraged. XVII. NOISE Two criteria can be listed under this title, the mandatory one being that practices are in place to reduce noise pollution generated by the hotel`s operations, and a voluntary one is that double glazed or other insulating systems are used to reduce impacts of external noise. XVIII. BUILDINGS AND GREEN AREAS An interesting mandatory criterion under this heading is that the hotel management implements plans to reduce light pollution, as well as water pollution from runoff and erosion, native plants are used in external areas; irrigation is carried out early in the morning and/or late in the evening. As voluntary criterion, the landscaped areas are predominantly planted with low water consumption plants and the hotel is producing its own compost. XIX. ENHANCING CULTURAL HERITAGE AND NATURAL SURROUNDINGS Other criteria include the protection of archaeological artefacts, so that they would not be sold, traded or displayed except as permitted by law.
