Sustainable Tourism Law

406 SUSTAINABLE TOURISM LAW of both generating and receiving countries, on local communities and indigenous peoples, as well as on international relations and exchanges (Müller, 2012) The United Nations designated 2017 as the International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development. In the context of the universal 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the International Year has promoted the change in policies, business practices and consumer behaviour towards a more sustainable tourism sector that can contribute to all the 17 SDGs. CONCLUSIONS It has become increasingly important to be an informed traveller, be a respectful traveller, to follow tips for a responsible traveller, protect our planet, to support local economy, honour your hosts and our common heritage. Another major assumption of the Code of ethics is regarding the free market economy and its benefits. The code looks at the issue of marketization from the perspective of the industry and ignores the diverse views of local communities and the pangs of their integration into its fold. Hence it is argued, “World tourism industry has much to gain by operating in a market economy and environment of free trade”. The Code is callously insensitive to the enormous problems created as a result of the incorporation of local communities into the market economy. One of the Code’s aims was to summarize various documents, codes and declarations (Manila Declaration, Tourism Bill of Rights, Tourist Code) of the same nature or with a similar purpose, which had been adopted by UNWTO throughout the years. The aim was also to: a) have a document that was enhanced by new considerations stemming from the evolution of society; and b) establish a single framework of reference for worldwide tourist agents on the brink of a new century and of a new millennium. On several occasions, the Code expressly mentions the right of all persons to practice tourism. Furthermore, Articles 2 and 7 make explicit reference to the rights of persons with disabilities and the need for all stakeholders to facilitate these persons’ travel and tourist movements. The diversity of our world unites us, and gives us the chance to explore, engage and experience the best that local culture and communities have to offer. Respecting our world and all that makes us different and unique will enhance your travel experience.
