SUSTAINABLE TOURISM IN ARGENTINA 537 As a result of the development of The Federal Plan for Sustainable Tourism, the opportunities related to current and potential tourism spaces have been determined. The tourism space is understood as a territorial area determined by its geographical location, physical characteristics and temporary location where tourism activities can or could be developed. Based on this conception, the current or real tourism space is that in which tourism activities are developed, while the potential tourism space is that in which they could be developed but are not because of some restrictions (lack of access points and roads, extreme temperatures, etc.). 7 In order to do this, the Map of Opportunities was created to determine the current and potential touristic points, on the basis of which it is proposed to create development corridors in the regions that create visible touristic places according to their cultural, geographic or historic value; consider interregional relations; reconsider the international borders; appreciate the role of provincial and national routes. 8 Additionally, in order to evaluate the effects of the plan, some indicators will be measured at the beginning of the process by the Monitoring and Assessment Programme. Considering as indicators: Environmental, Sociocultural and Socio- -Economic. Environmental: Sustainability indicators help to circumscribe problems related to the use of natural resources and the environment of a destination. They will be referred to the following factors: tourism carrying capacity, tourist satisfaction with the destination and the environment of the visited destination, water and air pollution in Protected natural areas and beaches, the usage of alternative energy, the number of road accidents during high season for holidays, crimes against tourists. Socio-Cultural: In this case, the indicators will answer the questions generated by the different tourism factors about the communities’ life, such as the threats to life styles and cultural attractions, or the community participation in the benefits generated by the tourism activity. They rely on quantitative and qualitative measures for factors of cultural and archaeological patrimony preservation, the participation of host communities, the level of acceptance and coexistence between the inhabitants of the destinations and tourism, among others. 7 The Tourist Regions of Argentina, page 21. 8 https://www.lanacion.com.ar/715935-nuevo-plan-federal-de-turismo-sustentable.
