Sustainable Tourism Law

FROM TOURISM TO SUSTAINABLE TOURISM 57 Among others, we must also mention the Convention on the Liability of Hotel-keepers concerning the Property of their Guests, signed in Paris on 17 December 1962. International (and national) organization related to Tourism In drawing the framework of Tourism Law, we must mention the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO). It is the United Nations agency responsible for the promotion of responsible, sustainable and universally accessible tourism. WTO was founded in 1975. UNWTO’s membership includes 157 countries, 6 Associate Members and 500 Affiliate Members representing the private sector, educational institutions, tourism associations and local tourism authorities 37 . UNWTO was created in 1946, replacing the International Union of Official Tourist Propaganda Organizations (IUOTPO), established in 1934. UNWTO headquarters are in Madrid. In Italy, an important role was played by ENIT – Ente nazionale italiano per il turismo. ENIT was established in 1919, with the name of the National Organization for the Promotion of Tourism Industries (Law no. 2099 of 12 October 1919, conv. In Law 7 April 1921, no. 610). With Presidential Decree 27 August 1960, no. 1041, the role of ENIT was focused on promoting and increasing the tourist movement from abroad to Italy. In 2005 it assumed the name ENIT – Agenzia nazionale del turismo. Other entities active in Tourism are, as we have seen, the Touring Club Italiano the Italian Automobile Club, the La Lega Navale Italiana and FAI, Fondo Ambiente Italiano. FAI is a non-profit trust established in 1975. Its goals are to promote a “ tangible culture of respect for Italy’s natural heritage, art, history and traditions ”. As per the United States, it is worth mentioning the U.S. Travel and Tourism Advisory Board 38 . 37 http://www2.unwto.org/content/who-we-are-0. 38 The United States Travel and Tourism Advisory Board serves as the advisory body to the Secretary of Commerce on matters relating to the travel and tourism industry in the United States. The Board advises the Secretary on government policies and programs that affect the U.S. travel and tourism industry, offers counsel on current and emerging issues, and provides a forum for discussing and proposing solutions to industry-related problems (verbatim from https://www.trade.gov/ttab/) .
