Source: Adapted from European Union (2013) In a global perspective, sustainable development strategies bring together various strands of economic, social and environmental policy under one overarching objective – keep improving the quality of life and well-being for present and future generations. The Eurostat monitoring report, for example, provides a statistical picture of progress towards the goals and objectives of the EU Sustainable development strategies based on the EU Sustainable development indicators set (European Commission, 2016). The EU Sustainable Development Strategy, a strategic priority, includes objectives of environmental protection, equity and social cohesion, economic prosperity and the implementation of commitments at the international level, considering broader and global dimension of current challenges (Kovacic, 2017). Several documents have been approved. To succeed, it is important to collect reliable statistical data from various fields in order to measure progress and assess the effectiveness of EU policies and programs (Kovacic, 2017). In this context, eco-efficiency has become a progressive and consistent tool towards the transition to sustainability where the efforts of creation of eco- -efficiency indicators have been proposed as a basis to achieve comparative studies and help decision-making tasks since it may provide better financial, environmental, and social performance (Broman & Robert, 2017). Several authors have alerted to the need to avoid degradation of the ecosystem services (food, water, recreation, minerals, beaches) that are an important issue for the livelihoods of populations, mainly in the developing countries (Angerer et al., 2016). Sustainable development has therefore become a major criterion in the evaluation of the degree of healthy development in a tourism region or a country.
