Wine Law
208 WINE LAW Let us examine the case of one of the most renowned Italian PDOs, the DOC Prosecco. In the designation of the Prosecco wines the reference on the label to the geographical unit “ Provincia di Treviso ” or “ Treviso ” is allowed, under the condition that the batch of wine consists exclusively of grapes harvested from vineyards located in that district and the processing and packaging of the product took place in the same district. The same rule applies to the reference to “ Provincia di Trieste ”, “ Trieste ”, “ Pokrajina Trst ” or “ Trst ”, which is allowed on the label, under the condition that the batch of wine consists exclusively of grapes harvested from vineyards located in that district. However, in this case, the processing and product packaging shall take place in the entire Region of Friuli Venezia Giulia. In the case of Prosecco, “ Asolo ” or “ Colli Asolani ” and “ Conegliano- Valdobbiadene ” are created as autonomous DOCG production areas. If we consider the product specification for the DOCG “ Conegliano-Valdobbiadene- Prosecco ”, lastly modified on 5 July 2019, we will find the provision according to which reference to municipalities or hamlets listed in the annex is allowed, provided that the name of the municipality or hamlet in which the grapes were obtained is accompanied by the term “ Rive ” and that said references are listed in the vineyards register. While labelling, the year of production of the grapes must be indicate.
