Wine Law

REGULATION OF ORGANIC WINE IN THE EUROPEAN UNION 223 especially in emerging sectors, it seems necessary to continue updating and refining current Codex standards (Action 17). 4. REGULATION OF PRODUCTION OF ORGANIC WINE AS OF 1 JANUARY 2022 As mentioned, the publication of Regulation (EU) 2018/848, of 30 May on organic production and labelling of organic products 30 , repealing Council Regulation (EC) No 834/2007, established, as of 1 January 2022, a new legal framework for organic products, in general, and for wine, in particular. The purpose of this Regulation is to review and reinforce the European Union regulations concerning organic production and labelling of organic products with regard to the control system, the commercial regime and production standards. It is proposed to establish a level playing field for operators, harmonisation and simplification of the rules and increased consumer confidence in organic products and the organic production logo. The new regulations reflect the evolution of this rapidly growing sector so as to ensure fair competition for farmers, while avoiding fraud and maintaining consumer confidence. Among the new regulation’s claims, it is possible to highlight the regulatory simplification due to the progressive suppression of a series of exceptions and exclusions. Moreover, there has been a control system strengthening through stricter preventive measures and rigorous supervision throughout the entire supply chain, the extension of the list of products to which the organic production standards apply, such as vine leaves, as well as the certification of small farmers being facilitated with the new group certification system and the adoption of a more uniform approach to reduce the risk of accidental pesticide contamination 31 . 4.1. General and specific principles Organic production is a comprehensive agricultural management and food production system that combines best practices in terms of the environment and climate, a high level of biodiversity, the conservation of natural resources and the application of high production standards that respond to the demand, 30 DOUE 14 June 2018. 31 Source : https://ec.europa.eu/info/food-farming-fisheries/farming/organic-farming/future- organics_es ( accessed on 12 August 2020).
