THE EVOLUTION OF ROMANIA’S VINE AND WINE LAW 469 Today being perhaps the most famous in Romania, the varieties grown at Murfatlar have a specific aroma, given by the light and stony soil, combined with a favourable warm climate. The stars of this region are white wines: Pinot Gris , Chardonnay , Aligoté , Sauvignon Blanc and Muscat Ottonel . Red and rosé varieties are also cultivated, all with a strong personal note, such as the delicacy of the Pinot Noir variety or the wild character of the Cabernet Sauvignon . Other famous vineyards in Dobrogea are Babadag , Istria or Sarica Niculi ț el . d) Oltenia The Oltenia wine region presents perhaps the most favourable conditions for the cultivation of vines, namely geographical position, soil structure and composition or the warm climate. That is why there is archaeological evidence that vines have been grown in this region since the 7 th or 8 th centuries BCE. Among the famous vineyards in Oltenia are Dealurile Craiovei (Craiova Hills), Drăgăşani , Severin , Sâmbureşti or Plaiurile Drâncei (Drâncei Plains). In 1887, the wines produced in Oltenia gained international fame, after the Tămâioasă Românească won the gold medal at the Paris Exposition. Other famous varieties, besides Tămâioasa Românească , which is still cultivated, include Negru de Drăgăşani , Fetească Neagră , Sauvignon Blanc and Cabernet Sauvignon , which was first brought to Romania in the Drăgă ș ani Vineyard, in 1867. e) Transylvania Archaeologists have found in Transylvania objects that attest to the vine cultivation and winemaking since the 6 th century BCE. The most representative vineyards are Târnave , Alba , Sebeş-Apold , Aiud , Miniş-Măderat and Diosig . The Târnave vineyard, besides being the largest vineyard in the region, is famous for its high-quality wines. Transylvania is the dry white wines paradise: among the famous varieties grown there are Fetească Albă , Fetească Regală , Sauvignon Blanc , Chardonnay , Muscat Ottonel or Riesling Italian . Transylvania also grows the Pink Traminer , a semi- aromatic variety of German origin, and, lately, red wines such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cadarcă, Pinot Noir or Fetească Neagră have been noticed as well.
