Wine Law

480 WINE LAW (i) the wine must come from grapes harvested from vineyards registered in the RPV and from a grape variety allowed to produce varietal wine; (ii) the grapes from which the varietal wine is obtained must come from a proportion of at least 85% of one of the varieties permitted to produce varietal wine; and (iii) the wine must be produced in Romania, from grapes harvested in wine- growing areas, delimited according to the legislation in force. (i) The varietal wine is produced from grapes from the following varieties: Aligote , Burgundy Sea , Blackberry , Chardonnay , Cabernet Sauvignon , Fetească Neagră , Fetească Regală , Merlot , Muscat Ottonel , Pinot Gris , Pinot Noir , Italian Riesling , Sauvignon Blanc and Syrah . The list of varieties is updated annually and notified to the European Commission by the ONVPV. The right to use the name of the vine in labelling shall be granted according to the legislation in force, by the authorisation of the producer of grapes intended for the production of varietal wine, the authorisation of producer of varietal wine or the certificate attesting the right to market varietal wine , issued by the ONVPV. Regarding those wines without DOC, IG or a varietal name – the simply called “ wines ” –, it is worth mentioning that, in order to avoid that some producers infringe the legal labelling provisions, to protect honest DOC/IG wine producers from the inconveniences caused by the use by other producers of disturbing inscriptions for the promotion of truly quality wines on the market and, last but not least, to protect consumers, the quality certification mark for DOC/IG wines was introduced in the labelling system for bottled and marketed DOC/IG wines, a system managed and controlled by ONVPV. Wine producers who own vineyards located in DOC/IG delimited areas or plantations authorised to supply grapes for the production of DOC and IG wines (according to the conditions set out in the relevant specifications) and who are interested in obtaining the right to use the name of its DOC or IG, attested by an official ONVPV document, are obliged by the legislation in force to mark the bottles containing DOC/IG certified and controlled wines, with a wine quality certification badge (hologram type), as observed in this image.
