Conclusion A new strong player made its appearance on the world wine stage. He is still weak but decided to develop its enormous potential in a process that is now irreversible. Russia’s bid for a comeback as a global viticulture and winemaking competitor is elaborate and linear. It is in tune with a long term strategy of reaching stable results on the internal as well as on the international markets. The steady increase of the country’s influence is reflected in the latest developments in the International Organization of Vine and Wine. On 26 November 2020 the 18th OIV General Assembly endorsed a resolution in favour of the recent adoption of the Russian language as the 6th official language of the organisation 54 . This will only restore a situation that has already existed till the end of the XXth century 55 . In fact, the restoration is quite a part of the Russian phenomenon. It already is plainly perceptible that studies on the new Russian role will more and more draw attention in order to explain and understand this fusion of traditions, industrial ground and scientific potential for an ancient land that is now paradoxically rediscovered. 53 There is an oversight in the English translation of the US Department of Agriculture, cited above in note 40.
