Implementing labelling and packaging rules With entering into force of Regulation No 607/2009, implementing labelling rules was finally available. Such rules applied to many products of the wine sector, for instance, wine, liqueur wine, sparkling wine, quality sparkling wine, quality aromatic sparkling wine, semi-sparkling wine, aerated semi-sparkling wine, partially fermented grape must, wine from raisined grapes and wine of overripe grapes. Regulation of the wine sector basically moved on three levels, which were described under Title III of Regulation No 479/2008 on regulatory measures: rules which relate to PDOs and PGIs, as much as rules which relate to the traditional terms of the above- mentioned products and, finally, rules which relate to the labelling and presentation of certain wine sector products, which are the core of this essay. Pursuant to article 49 of the Regulation, unless they satisfy the requirements of Article 2(1)(a) of the mentioned Directive 2000/13, the labelling of different types of wine 33 was not to be supplemented by any particulars other than the so-called “horizontal rules”. These were indications or marks identifying the lot to which a foodstuff belongs to and nominal quantities for prepacked products, together with: (a) the designation for the category of the grapevine product under Annex IV; (b) the term protected designation of origin or protected geographical indication, as well as the name of the protected designation of origin or geographical indication, in the case of wines with a PDO or PGI; (c) the actual alcoholic strength by volume; (d) an indication of provenance; (e) an indication of the bottler or, in the case of sparkling wine, aerated sparkling wine, quality sparkling wine or quality aromatic sparkling wine, the name of the producer or vendor; (f) an indication of the importer in the case of imported wines; and (g) in the case of 33 I.e. wine, new wine still in fermentation, liqueur wine, sparkling wine, quality sparkling wine, quality aromatic sparkling wine, aerated sparkling wine, semi-sparkling wine, aerated semi-sparkling wine, grape must, partially fermented grape must, concentrated grape must, wine from raisined grapes or wine of overripe grapes.
