A PDO wine may as well refer to additional geographical units (in Italian, “ unità geografiche ” or, in the past “ menzioni aggiuntive ”), smaller than the production area of the DO, located within the same production area and individually listed, provided that the product is vinified separately and specifically claimed in the annual report of grape production. These geographical units shall be expressly delimited and can correspond to municipalities, hamlets or administrative areas or to defined local geographical areas. The list of additional geographical units and the related delimitation must be indicated in the annex to the product specifications in a special list. “ Cannubi San Lorenzo ” and “ Ravera ” are both additional geographical units, smaller than the production area of the DOCG Barolo, located within the same production area and listed in a list indicated in the annex to the product specification for the Barolo PDO. In this case, the wine comes from both geographical units. Let us examine the case of one of the most renowned Italian PDOs, the DOC Prosecco. In the designation of the Prosecco wines the reference on the label to the geographical unit “ Provincia di Treviso ” or “ Treviso ” is allowed, under the condition that the batch of wine consists exclusively of grapes harvested from vineyards located in that district and the processing and packaging of the product took place in the same district. The same rule applies to the reference to “ Provincia di Trieste ”, “ Trieste ”, “ Pokrajina Trst ” or “ Trst ”, which is allowed on the label, under the condition that the batch of wine consists exclusively of grapes harvested from vineyards located in that district.
