Wine Law

36 Valdobbiadene ” are created as autonomous DOCG production areas. If we consider the product specification for the DOCG “ Conegliano-Valdobbiadene-Prosecco ”, lastly modified on 5 July 2019, we will find the provision according to which reference to municipalities or hamlets listed in the annex is allowed, provided that the name of the municipality or hamlet in which the grapes were obtained is accompanied by the term “ Rive ” and that said references are listed in the vineyards register. While labelling, the year of production of the grapes must be indicate. In the labelling, the designation “Prosecco” shall follow the designation “Conegliano Valdobbiadene”, “Conegliano” or “Valdobbiadene” and have characters of equal or smaller dimensions. The term “ Rive ” (banks), followed by the name of the municipality or fraction, and “ superior ”, as well as the references to the “ millesimo ”, shall appear in characters with a maximum size equal to two-thirds of the name of the designation. The “ Rive di Collalto ” wine and the Collalto winery lead to another case of conflict between geographical name and name of the holding – quite similar to the situation in point 2.6. 4.6. Varietal wines We have seen that Regulation (EC) No. 1234/2007 and Regulation No 607/2009 introduced into the wine legislation the so-called “varietal wines”, i.e. wines without PDO nor PGI which, nevertheless, bear wine grapes varieties’ names and vintage years if they conform with a certification accreditation. Therefore, in order to distinguish, within the category of wines without PDO or PGI, those that fall under the subcategory “varietal wines” from those that do not benefit from this openness, specific rules on the use of optional particulars were established since Regulation No 607/2009, on the one hand, for wines with PDO and PGI and, on the other, for wines without PDO or PGI, bearing in mind also “varietal wines”.
